HERTFORD360: FAQs

WHAT IS HERTFORD360?

hertford360 is an interactive challenge that starts in January and runs until 31 July 2017. We’ve worked out distances to fabulous cities across the world to give your challenge perspective; so each participant chooses their target distance from 360km (Oxford to Galway), 1080km (Oxford to Berlin), 1800km (Oxford to Rome), 2880km (Oxford to Moscow), or 3600km (Oxford to San Francisco).

You can cycle, run, walk or swim – or combine all four.

The main objective is for everyone’s collective total of kilometres to contribute to us reaching our goal of 40,075km – the circumference of the globe.

WHY ARE YOU DOING THIS EVENT?

The success of the Bridge to Bridge, Oxford to Venice and Tour de Hertford bike rides, which raised over £460,000, got us thinking… How can we build on these events and engage more supporters on a global scale?

Traditional challenge-events engage supporters and build camaraderie, but they are limited by a fixed date and geographical limits. So we are investing in digital technology to become the first higher education charity to offer a virtual challenge. In this event, the Hertford community can participate at any time, at any pace, anywhere in the world.

HOW LONG ARE YOU DOING THIS EVENT FOR?

The event is being launched on 1 January 2017 and ends on the 31 July 2017 to coincide with the end of the #TeamHertford campaign.

WHAT SUPPORT WILL HERTFORD COLLEGE PROVIDE?

Motivation, updates, bespoke hertford360 jerseys, progress reports, and a virtual event platform to track your challenge!

HOW DO I PAY THE REGISTRATION DONATION?

If you opt to make a monthly donation, the Development Office will get in contact with you to set this up. With the registration fee and fundraising option, please follow the instructions when signing up.

CAN I DONATE A ONE OFF AMOUNT INSTEAD OF A MONTHLY GIFT?

A one-off donation of £120 or more would be great – and will qualify for registration. You can make your donation here.

I’M A CURRENT DONOR OVER £120 PER YEAR, HOW CAN I GET MY CODE FOR FREE REGISTRATION?

Please contact the Development Office by phoning +44 (0)1865 279428 or by emailing development.office@hertford.ox.ac.uk.

I HAVE GRADUATED IN THE LAST TWO YEARS, HOW CAN I GET MY CODE FOR REGISTRATION OF £2 PER MONTH?

Please contact the Development Office by phoning +44 (0)1865 279428 or by emailing development.office@hertford.ox.ac.uk.

I'VE NOT CHOSEN TO FUNDRAISE FROM FAMILY AND FRIENDS BUT THERE’S A £150 FUNDRAISING GOAL ON MY ACTIVITY PAGE – IS THIS CORRECT?

If you have opted for the monthly donation, or you are an existing donor, this goal does not apply (unless you’d like to fundraise on top, or make a donation to your own page!). This is just part of the platform and you can ignore. For those who have opted for a monthly gift, it would be great to add your projected gift amount for the year (or two, for students and recent graduates) as an offline donation – eg. £120 for those giving £10 per month for one year.

DO I HAVE TO BE A MEMBER OF HERTFORD TO REGISTER?

Everyone is welcome to participate – alumni, staff, students, friends, neighbours and colleagues!

DO I HAVE TO REACH MY TARGET DISTANCE IN ONE GO?

No, this event runs over seven months and you can do as little or as much as you like – over what period of time suits you. As long as you track all your activity by connecting your tracking app, you can complete the challenge however you choose.

WHAT WILL THE MONEY RAISED BE USED FOR?

hertford360 is part of the #TeamHertford campaign, which aims to raise £300,000 for Student Support at Hertford – outreach, bursaries, hardship grants and scholarships. More information can be found here.

And with thanks to the generosity of an alumnus, who has underwritten the cost of the virtual platform, we’re pleased to say that every penny of your donation and/or fundraising will go to Student Support.

HOW DO I LINK STRAVA OR MAPMYFITNESS TO MY ACTIVITY PAGE?

Once you register, you’ll create a hertford360 supporter page that is yours to track your challenge. To ensure everything is counted, be sure to connect your supporter page to either Strava or MapMyFitness. Your progress will also be tracked on the leader boards on the landing page.

For instructions on how to use Strava and MapMyFitness, watch these short guides:

HOW DO I MANUALLY ADD MY KILOMETRES TO MY ACTIVITY PAGE?

To log your activity manually on your supporter page (whether it's in miles, km or steps), click on the fitness icon under ‘What’s on your mind?’. Then, change the activity, distance, duration and time. Afterwards, click Post. Et voilà! See here for more information.

I DON'T HAVE A PHONE OR DEVICE CAPABLE OF TRACKING ACTIVITY. CAN I STILL BE INVOLVED IN THE CAMPAIGN?

Yes, you can still set up your page and add runs manually. Your distance will still count towards the cumulative goal of 40,075km.

IF I’M SWIMMING, HOW DO I CLOCK MY KILOMETRES?

Use the length of the pool to work out how many kilometres you have done and manually add your distance to your EverydayHero activity page.

I’M UNFIT OR UNWELL, CAN I STILL TAKE PART?

As with any fitness challenge, we recommend you see your doctor first. But remember this is a challenge you can do at your own pace and over several months.

WHY DOES IT SUGGEST TO CREATE A TEAM, AND LEADERBOARD, ON MY ACTIVITY PAGE?

Please ignore these buttons - they are part of the platform that cannot be omitted. However, there are leaderboards for the event on the hertford360 landing page.

CAN I STILL PURCHASE A HERTFORD360 JERSEY EVEN THOUGH I’M NOT TAKING PART?

Yes, of course – they are £45 each. Please get in touch with the Development Office to place your order.
